Traders at Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State took to the streets on Tuesday, the 27th of January, 2926, to protest against efforts to implement Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s directive to close the market.
Videos shared online captured large groups of traders marching through the market, some chanting praises of the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In defiance of the governor’s order, several traders kept their shops open during the protest.

Reports indicate that Governor Soludo, on Monday, the 26th of January, 2026, criticized traders for continuing to adhere to the sit-at-home order. He questioned why shops remained closed despite the relative peace and calm in Anambra.
Following this, the governor ordered the shutdown of Onitsha Main Market until next Monday.
