The Kogi State Government has mourned the death of at least 26 people who lost their lives in a boat accident along the River Niger on Tuesday evening.
Reports indicated that the victims, largely traders from Ibaji Local Government Area, were travelling to Illushi Market in Edo State when the boat overturned.
In a condolence message issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the tragedy was described as devastating. According to him, Governor Usman Ododo has already extended his sympathy to the affected families and the Ibaji community.
“The government and people of Kogi State received with deep sadness the news of the boat mishap on the River Niger. This is a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and the people of Ibaji in this moment of grief,” the statement said.

Governor Ododo instructed the State Emergency Management Agency to collaborate with local authorities in offering immediate support to the bereaved families. He also assured that the state would engage with federal bodies to strengthen safety measures on the waterways.
The statement added that communities living around the river should avoid overcrowding on boats and ensure the use of life jackets to reduce risks during water travel.
