Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has granted clemency to 36 inmates as part of celebrations marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
The release, announced on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, follows a proclamation signed on September 24, 2025, under the Public Seal of Osun State.
State officials confirmed that the beneficiaries had exhibited good behavior during their incarceration and met the criteria for early release under the Governor’s constitutional clemency powers.
Governor Adeleke described the gesture as a reflection of his administration’s commitment to justice, mercy, and rehabilitation.
He urged the released inmates to embrace lawful living, contribute positively to their communities, and avoid a return to crime.
“The decision to grant clemency is in line with our vision to promote social reintegration and provide second chances for those willing to reform,” Governor Adeleke said.
The released inmates include individuals convicted of minor and non-violent offenses.

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to enhance social harmony, reinforce national unity, and celebrate the nation’s independence in a meaningful way.
Observers note that the exercise underscores a growing trend among Nigerian states to use Independence Day celebrations to promote reconciliation, rehabilitate offenders, and reduce prison overcrowding.
Governor Adeleke’s action complements other Independence Day initiatives in Osun State, including cultural programs, public outreach, and community development projects aimed at fostering patriotism and civic responsibility.
