The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State on Tuesday, December 2, elected Adebayo Adedamola as its flag bearer for the 2026 governorship election.
The primary, held in Osogbo, ended with Adedamola claiming a landslide victory, earning 919 of the 957 votes cast, while 20 ballots were declared invalid.
Announcing the results, the chairman of the primary committee, Humphrey Abba, said, “Void votes, 20. We told you earlier that one of the aspirants withdrew.
“The candidate that got the remaining votes is Adebayo Adedamola with 919 votes and stands elected and returned.”
Party delegates from across the state participated in the exercise, which was monitored by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and representatives from the PDP national headquarters.
Security around the venue was tight, with personnel from the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps stationed across access points.
Before voting began, the secretary of the primary committee, Sunday Solarin, informed delegates that only two names, Governor Adeleke and Adebayo Adedamola, appeared on the ballot, though Adeleke had stepped down after announcing his resignation from the party weeks earlier.

“Adeleke and Adebayo Adedamola are the two aspirants seeking the party’s ticket,” Solarin explained.
“However, Adeleke had already resigned from the party. Votes cast for Adeleke would eventually amount to waste,” he added.
First Daily earlier reported that Adeleke’s resignation had been officially submitted on November 4, 2025, in a letter addressed to the PDP Ward 2 chairman at Sagba Abogunde in Ede North Local Government Area.
In the letter, he cited the prolonged crisis within the party’s national leadership as his reason for leaving.
“Due to the current crisis within the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect,” he wrote.
“I thank the PDP for the opportunities given to me for my elections as a Senator (Represented Osun West) and as Governor of Osun State,” he stated.
His spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, later confirmed the governor’s departure.
