Fresh concerns over player welfare in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) have emerged following revelations by Enyimba midfielder Eze Ekwutoziam regarding his recovery from a serious knee injury.
Speaking during an appearance on SuperSports NaijaMade, Ekwutoziam disclosed that he was left to shoulder the financial burden of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery after sustaining the injury in training with Enyimba FC.
According to the midfielder, the club’s chairman, Nwankwo Kanu, offered to provide a loan to cover the medical expenses.
However, the proposed arrangement reportedly included deductions from his monthly salary—terms the player said he declined.
The development has sparked widespread debate among fans and stakeholders, many of whom view the situation as a reflection of deeper structural issues within the domestic league, particularly regarding medical support and player insurance.

Ekwutoziam was widely regarded as one of Enyimba’s standout performers last season, earning praise for his consistency and influence in midfield.
His absence has been felt both on and off the pitch, with supporters in Aba reportedly continuing to inquire about his condition months after the incident.
The case has reignited calls for improved welfare policies and stronger protections for players across the NPFL, especially in cases of injuries sustained in the line of duty.
While the midfielder continues his recovery journey, many within the football community have rallied behind him, expressing hope for a full return to action and a stronger comeback.
