Oyebanji Okays New Retirement Age, Service Extension for Ekiti Teachers

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has approved an immediate extension of the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years and increased their service period from 35 to 40 years.

The announcement was made on Sunday, the 5th of October, 2025, during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti.

To further encourage commitment and reward excellence, the governor presented cash prizes worth N46 million to outstanding teachers across the state.

He said the decision to extend the retirement age and service years was aimed at retaining experienced educators and improving the quality of education in the state.

According to him, a special committee will be constituted to manage the implementation, ensuring that only teachers who are mentally and physically sound will benefit from the policy.

Oyebanji also approved an upward review of allowances for Science Teachers and Heads of Departments and directed the immediate payment of outstanding 2019 leave bonus arrears.

“Teachers are the foundation upon which the future of our state is built. This initiative is part of our shared prosperity agenda to enhance their welfare and motivate them to continue shaping the next generation,” Oyebanji said.
