Oyo Flags Off Market Toilets To Tackle Open Defecation

The Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has intensified its campaign to end open defecation across Oyo State as part of efforts to improve sanitation and public health.

The state government flagged off the initiative on Saturday with the construction of a public toilet facility at Ojoo Market in Ibadan.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, and made available to journalists in Ibadan.

Speaking during the flag-off, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Engr. Ademola Aderinto, said the initiative formed part of the government’s efforts to promote proper sanitation and eliminate open defecation in line with the agenda of UNICEF and the state government.

Aderinto explained that the state is targeting the eradication of open defecation by 2031, adding that residents and visitors must support government efforts to achieve the goal within the stipulated timeline.

He noted that providing public toilet facilities in busy areas such as markets is a strategic move to eliminate open defecation and protect environmental and public health.

“The Oyo State Government remains committed to strengthening sanitation infrastructure and implementing policies aimed at ensuring cleaner public spaces and a healthier environment for all residents,” he said.

The commissioner also commended the management of Open Public Spaces for supporting the government’s environmental agenda and contributing to efforts to maintain a cleaner and healthier state.

He urged traders, residents and visitors at Ojoo Market to make proper use of the facility and cooperate with the government in promoting proper sanitation practices.

According to him, the project, being executed by the management of Open Public Spaces under the leadership of Mr Abdulateef Abdulganiyu, will provide traders, residents and visitors with a convenient and hygienic alternative to indiscriminate sanitation practices.
