Panic As Helicopter Crashes In Ondo Community, Occupants’ Fate Unknown

A helicopter crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday, October 5, 2026, with casualties feared.

The crash triggered panic in the riverine community, with residents reportedly fleeing the area.

The number of people aboard the aircraft and their condition remained unknown as of press time. Residents said efforts were underway to access the crash site and assess the extent of the incident.

Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, said he was unaware of the crash but promised to make inquiries.

The identity and operator of the helicopter, its destination and purpose of the flight were also unknown.

Igbokoda is a major riverine and commercial centre in Ilaje, an oil-producing area where helicopters are frequently used for offshore and oil and gas operations.

The incident comes amid previous helicopter accidents involving offshore operations. On October 24, 2024, an Eastwind Aviation Sikorsky S-76 helicopter carrying eight people ditched into the Atlantic Ocean near Bonny Finima. Five bodies were later recovered.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau is responsible for investigating civil aviation accidents and serious incidents in Nigeria.

No official agency had confirmed the casualty figure or cause of Monday’s crash as of press time.
