Paris Olympics: Nigerian boxer suspended for anti-doping violation

Cynthia Temitayo Ogunsemilore, a Nigerian boxer set to debut in the under 60 kg category at the Paris Olympics, has been provisionally suspended for violating an anti-doping rule, according to the International Testing Agency (ITA).

A sample collected from Ogunsemilore revealed the presence of furosemide, a substance classified under “diuretics and masking agents” by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The ITA stated that the sample was collected in Paris on Thursday, just a day before the Olympics opening ceremony, and was confirmed by a WADA-accredited laboratory on Saturday.

As a result, Ogunsemilore has been informed of the findings and is barred from competing, training, coaching, or participating in any Olympic activities pending the resolution of her case.

Ogunsemilore, who is 22 years old, has the right to challenge the provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport and may request an analysis of her B sample.

This suspension adds to a growing list of doping cases at the Paris Games. Iraqi judoka Sajjad Sehen was suspended on Friday for testing positive for anabolic steroids, and Dominican volleyball player Lisvel Eve Mejia also tested positive for furosemide.
