Pastor Apologises After Backlash Over Viral Post Seeking Wife for Autistic Man

The founder of Omega Power Ministries, Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, has issued a public apology following widespread criticism over a viral social media post in which he sought a wife for a young man with autism under his care.

The post, shared on the cleric’s Facebook page on Friday, sparked intense reactions online, with many Nigerians describing the proposal — which included financial incentives such as accommodation and salary — as inappropriate and disrespectful to women.

Responding to the backlash on Saturday, Chinyere expressed regret, stating that his intention had been misunderstood.

“I want to apologise to all the ladies who watched the video. I can never degrade any woman… if my comments were seen as degrading, I apologise openly. I am very, very sorry,” he said.

The pastor explained that his actions were driven by concern for the wellbeing of the young man, who he said was abandoned as a child and has severe special needs requiring constant care.

According to him, the individual is unable to perform basic daily tasks independently and requires assistance with feeding, bathing, and other essential activities.

He added that previous attempts to secure caregivers had proven difficult, as those employed struggled to manage the demands of his condition.

Chinyere revealed that the man had earlier been taken to a care facility by the police but was rejected due to his condition, leaving his ministry to assume full responsibility for his welfare.

“I have more than 500 children who have been left at my gate over the years. Some have disabilities, including autism.

I cannot abandon them, and this young man is no exception,” he said.

He noted that the idea of seeking a long-term companion or caregiver was intended as a sustainable solution to ensure consistent support and companionship for the individual, not to objectify or diminish women.

“The intention was to provide him with care and support in a stable environment. I never intended it to be interpreted in a negative way,” he added.

The cleric also highlighted the humanitarian work carried out by his ministry, including the provision of free education, healthcare, and shelter for vulnerable children and individuals with special needs.

While acknowledging that making the appeal public may have contributed to the controversy, Chinyere said it was done to reach a wider audience who might be willing to help.

He stressed that any future arrangement would prioritise the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of the young man, noting that several individuals had already expressed interest in assisting.

The incident has sparked broader conversations about caregiving, disability support, and the ethical considerations surrounding public appeals for assistance, particularly in sensitive situations involving vulnerable individuals.

Chinyere concluded his remarks by reiterating his apology and reaffirming his commitment to humanitarian service.

“My goal is always to care for those who cannot care for themselves,” he said.
