PDP Holds Midnight Crisis Meeting Over 2027 Zoning, Party Unity

In a significant move that could reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convened a high-level emergency caucus meeting late Wednesday night at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

The confidential session kicked off at exactly 9:00 p.m., bringing together influential figures from the opposition party’s top brass under the leadership of Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, the party’s Acting National Chairman.

Those in attendance include state governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau).

Also present are PDP elder statesmen like former Kaduna State governor Senator Ahmed Makarfi and former Deputy National Chairman Chief Bode George.

Key members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and the Board of Trustees (BoT) are also taking part in the deliberations.

Insiders familiar with the proceedings revealed that the party is grappling with weighty matters, chief among them being the zoning formula for the 2027 presidential ticket.

“The zoning of the presidential ticket is a highly sensitive issue. Every region wants a fair shot, and no decision will be made lightly,” a party source disclosed under anonymity.

The meeting also comes at a time when the PDP is preparing for its national convention, expected to serve as a platform to realign internal structures and mend growing cracks within the party.

Unity within the PDP has come under pressure in recent months, as several members have defected to rival platforms, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

This internal discontent is reportedly a central talking point during tonight’s meeting.

Adding to the urgency is a surge in security concerns, especially following the shocking assassination attempt on Mr. Jude Ezenwafor, the party’s gubernatorial candidate in Anambra State.

“The leadership is not taking any chances. Member safety is now a top priority,” the source said.

The outcome of this nocturnal deliberation is expected to set the tone for the party’s 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday.

With stakes high and 2027 looming, the PDP appears to be recalibrating its strategy in what could be a defining moment for Nigeria’s main opposition party.
