PDP Leadership Crisis Heads To Supreme Court As Party Accuses APC Of Interference

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that its internal leadership dispute will now be decided by the Supreme Court, following escalating legal and political tensions within the opposition party.

In a press statement issued via its official X handle on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the development became necessary due to what the party described as “disturbing activities” surrounding its leadership structure in the last 48 hours.

According to the statement, the PDP has formally approached the apex court for a final determination on issues relating to the legitimacy of recent leadership decisions and what the party considers internal affairs.

The party expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would hear and resolve the matter “expeditiously,” stressing that all relevant legal processes have been duly filed and served on involved parties.

The statement also referenced disputes surrounding a recent gathering described by the party as a so-called convention, which it claimed was held in disregard of an ongoing Court of Appeal process.

The PDP maintained that the legitimacy of the event is currently before the courts and will be pursued to its conclusion.

Further legal controversy was noted regarding a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo, which reportedly granted access to a faction of the party backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to occupy the PDP national secretariat with security protection.

The PDP said it had instructed its lawyers to immediately appeal the judgment, describing the ruling as part of a broader legal battle over the control and direction of the party.

Beyond the courtroom disputes, the party accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of being behind efforts to destabilise opposition platforms in Nigeria, alleging a coordinated attempt to weaken multiparty democracy.

“These crises are clearly orchestrated by the APC-led government,” the statement read, adding that such actions were aimed at pushing Nigeria toward a one-party system.

The PDP further argued that the political tension reflects growing dissatisfaction among Nigerians over issues such as insecurity, economic hardship, and governance challenges.

Despite the internal conflict, the party urged its members and supporters to remain calm and hopeful, expressing confidence that the judiciary would ultimately uphold constitutional democracy.

The Supreme Court is expected to determine the legal validity of the disputed leadership arrangements in what has become one of the most significant internal crises in the PDP in recent times.
