Former Arsenal and Germany international defender Per Mertesacker has confirmed he will step down from his role as Head of Arsenal’s Academy at the end of the current season, bringing an end to a significant phase in the club’s youth development structure.
The announcement was revealed on Monday via football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano’s X handle, where Mertesacker expressed his emotional connection to the North London club while explaining his decision to leave.
“Arsenal is and will always be a very special club to me, so this was a difficult decision. I am very thankful for the trust the club put in me,” the former defender was quoted as saying.
Mertesacker has played a pivotal role in shaping Arsenal’s academy since assuming leadership of the youth system, overseeing the growth of several promising talents and reinforcing the pathway from the academy to the first team.
His tenure has been widely praised for strengthening the club’s long-term development strategy.
While Arsenal are yet to name a successor, his departure is expected to mark the close of an important chapter in the club’s commitment to nurturing homegrown players.
Mertesacker joined Arsenal in 2011 from German side Werder Bremen and quickly established himself as a mainstay in defence.
Renowned for his commanding presence, aerial strength, and composed style of play, he became a dependable figure at the back during his time at the Emirates Stadium.

Over the course of his playing career with the Gunners, the towering centre-back made more than 170 Premier League appearances and scored nine goals, many of which came from decisive set-piece situations.
He was part of the squad that lifted three FA Cup titles in the 2013–14, 2014–15, and 2016–17 seasons, as well as three FA Community Shields. Mertesacker also frequently wore the captain’s armband and was known for mentoring younger teammates.
Following his retirement from professional football in 2018, Mertesacker transitioned seamlessly into coaching at Arsenal.
His rise to Head of the Academy saw him take on a central role in developing the club’s next generation, further cementing his legacy beyond his achievements on the pitch.
As Arsenal prepare for his exit at the end of the season, attention will turn to who will take over the academy leadership and continue the work Mertesacker helped establish.
