The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has mourned the death of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, describing him as a committed patriot and passionate advocate for workers’ rights.
Obi expressed his condolences in a message posted on his X handle on Friday, recalling his interactions with Ugboaja during his time in the Labour Party.
The former Anambra State governor said he first met Ugboaja while he was associated with the Labour Party and subsequently crossed paths with him on several occasions.
Obi described the late labour leader as a man deeply committed to workers’ welfare, justice, fairness and the development of Nigeria.
According to him, Ugboaja consistently demonstrated concern for ordinary Nigerians, particularly workers whose contributions to national development were often overlooked.
“I have lost a friend, a committed patriot, and a passionate advocate for the interests of workers and the building of a better Nigeria, Mr. Emmanuel Ugboaja,” Obi said.
He recalled being impressed by Ugboaja’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers and his belief in creating a country where citizens could live and work with dignity.

Obi also noted that the late NLC official was not indifferent to the challenges confronting Nigerians, saying he spoke with conviction and consistently advocated for the interests of ordinary people.
“Emmanuel was not one to remain indifferent to the challenges facing ordinary Nigerians. He spoke with conviction and consistently demonstrated a genuine concern for the people, particularly workers whose contributions to the nation are often overlooked,” he said.
The NDC candidate described Ugboaja’s death as a painful loss to his family, friends, colleagues and others who shared his ideals.
He said Nigeria had lost someone who believed in the possibility of a better country and was willing to contribute towards achieving that vision.
Obi extended his condolences to Ugboaja’s family, friends, colleagues and members of the labour movement mourning his death.
He prayed for strength for the deceased’s loved ones and for Ugboaja to be granted eternal rest.
“May God grant his loved ones the strength to bear this difficult moment and grant Emmanuel Ugboaja eternal rest. May his soul rest in peace,” Obi added.
