Peter Obi Pays Tribute to Late President Buhari in Daura

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, paid a solemn visit to Daura on Wednesday to extend his condolences to the family of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier this week.

Obi arrived at the late president’s private residence a day after Buhari was laid to rest according to Islamic rites.

The visit was marked by a quiet moment of reflection as the former Anambra State governor signed the condolence register and exchanged words of comfort with bereaved family members.

Dressed in modest black attire, Obi’s presence in Buhari’s hometown was seen as a gesture of statesmanship and national unity, transcending party lines.

Photos from the visit, credited to journalist Faith Maji, captured the former presidential contender engaging with mourners and standing beside the condolence book, visibly moved.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State in the 1980s before returning to power democratically in 2015, was buried on Tuesday evening at 5:50 p.m. following Janazah (funeral prayers) led by Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, Imam of Daura’s Central Mosque.

In a final military honor, Buhari’s remains were escorted by top-ranking officers — including Army Generals and Service Chiefs — to the gravesite.

A ceremonial 21-gun salute reverberated through Daura, bidding farewell to a leader whose political legacy spanned over four decades.

Peter Obi’s appearance among dignitaries in Daura signals a moment of national reflection amid Nigeria’s complex political landscape.

Despite ideological differences during the 2023 elections, Obi’s visit underscores a shared respect for the office and the man who once held it.
