Former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed gratitude to Nigerians at home and abroad for their prayers and solidarity following an incident at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) office in Benin, Edo State.
In a statement shared via his verified X account on Wednesday, February 25, Obi described himself as “profoundly grateful” for the outpouring of support after the episode, which he said also affected the family of former Edo State governor, John Oyegun, and another former governor, Oserheimen Osunbor.
Obi paid tribute to Oyegun as a “distinguished elder” who has served Nigeria in various capacities, and extended concern to Osunbor, noting that the support shown during the difficult moment had strengthened his faith in Nigeria’s shared humanity and collective hope for a better future.
Reflecting on his political journey, Obi said experiences of violence and insecurity are not new to him.
He recalled that years ago, insecurity in Anambra State shaped his resolve to contest for the governorship, driven by the belief that leadership must restore order, security, and public trust.

The former governor warned that growing lawlessness across the country demands courage and civic responsibility from citizens.
Quoting the ancient philosopher Plato, he noted that “the price good people pay for refusing to participate in government is to live under the rule of bad people.”
Obi urged Nigerians to remain resolute in electing leaders defined by competence, commitment, character, and compassion, stressing that leadership should prioritise national interest above personal ambition.
“Together, with courage and unity, we can build the peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria our people deserve,” he stated, reiterating his oft-used phrase: “A new Nigeria is possible.”
The statement has since generated widespread reactions online, with supporters echoing calls for responsible leadership and national renewal.
