The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria has directed its members nationwide to inspect their fuel dispensing meters following a warning by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority over alleged under-dispensing at filling stations.
PETROAN National President, Billy Gillis-Harry, disclosed this on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
Gillis-Harry said the association’s National Executive Council held an emergency meeting on Tuesday after the regulator raised concerns about dispensing accuracy.
He said the meeting lasted until about 10pm, after which members were instructed to check their pumps and correct any faults discovered.
According to him, prolonged use can cause dispensing equipment to malfunction, resulting in either short-measuring or giving customers more fuel than they paid for. He recalled losing money in his own retail business after a faulty meter dispensed more fuel than customers purchased.

He urged motorists to monitor pump readings, collect receipts and know their vehicles’ tank capacities to help identify discrepancies.
The directive followed an NMDPRA warning issued on Tuesday, September 22, after the regulator raised concerns about under-dispensing nationwide.
The authority ordered operators to calibrate and verify their dispensing meters and totalisers, warning that persistent or serious violations could attract sanctions, including licence revocation.
The latest warning follows previous enforcement action. In July 2026, NMDPRA sealed two filling stations in the Akute-Ajuwon area of Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State, over alleged under-dispensing and other regulatory breaches. The authority said one of the stations had faced repeated enforcement action since 2025.
Gillis-Harry said PETROAN was treating the warning seriously and had begun engaging members to identify and rectify equipment faults.
He added that the association works with the Weights and Measures Division of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and NMDPRA on the accuracy and functionality of fuel dispensing equipment.
