Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation HADIN KAI have foiled a major terrorist attack on Kukawa town in Borno State, with coordinated ground and air operations reportedly neutralising several fighters and destroying motorcycles used by the insurgents.
The attack was launched at about 10:50 p.m. on August 28, 2026, when terrorists engaged troops of 101 Special Forces Battalion deployed in Kukawa.
According to a statement issued on Saturday night by the Acting Military Information Officer, Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, the troops responded with direct and indirect fire, forcing the attackers to withdraw towards the Cross Kauwa axis.
The military noted that several terrorists were reportedly killed during the encounter, while others sustained gunshot wounds as they fled. Ground troops later recovered some of the terrorists’ bodies during an exploitation of the area.
The operation was subsequently reinforced by intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets of the Multinational Joint Task Force, which tracked about 20 motorcycles carrying fleeing terrorists towards the Tunbuns/Kangarwa axis.
The army said the Air Component reportedly killed additional 15 terrorists and destroyed 10 motorcycles.
During further ground exploitation, troops recovered two motorcycles, neutralised another terrorist and recovered assorted ammunition and other items.

The military said the coordinated operation effectively disrupted the attack, prevented the terrorists from regrouping and significantly degraded their mobility and fighting capability in the area.
It was gathered that four soldiers sustained injuries during the engagement.
The military said the successful operation highlights the growing integration of ground forces, air power and intelligence assets in Operation HADIN KAI’s campaign against terrorist groups operating across Borno State.
The Joint Task Force said it would sustain offensive and intelligence-led operations aimed at degrading terrorist capabilities, denying them freedom of movement and protecting communities across the North-East.
The military also commended the troops for their resilience, courage and professionalism in repelling the attack and pursuing the fleeing terrorists.
