Polaris Bank has dismissed reports claiming that more than 34 people lost their lives in a fire outbreak at its Broad Street branch on Lagos Island on Thursday, June 18, 2026, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on the same day, the bank said the fire originated from a customer’s vehicle parked on the third floor of its 17-storey building at 61/65 Broad Street, Lagos Island.
According to the bank, emergency response procedures were immediately activated once the incident was detected, while firefighters swiftly intervened and brought the situation under control before it could escalate.
It stressed that no casualties or fatalities were recorded, adding that reports suggesting mass deaths were entirely untrue. The bank also confirmed that investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

The clarification followed earlier confirmation from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, which said the fire broke out at about 11:33 a.m. on the third floor of the building’s parking facility.
Controller General of the agency, Margaret Adeseye, said firefighters from the Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations responded promptly after receiving a distress call.
She explained that the blaze involved a stationary saloon car and was quickly contained, adding that only the vehicle and its immediate surroundings were affected.
Adeseye confirmed that no injuries or deaths were recorded in the incident. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, while investigations remain ongoing.
