The Nigeria Police Force has announced the passing of retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police Adeleke Taiwo Olatunde and Commissioner of Police Hassan Saleh Gwani, describing both senior officers as dedicated professionals who served the nation with distinction.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police said retired AIG Olatunde died on July 23 at his residence in Lagos, while CP Gwani passed away on July 19 at the Saudi German Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving treatment following a brief illness.
The Inspector-General of Police, alongside the Force leadership, extended condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased officers, acknowledging their years of commitment and sacrifice in the service of the country.
“The leadership of the Force conveys its deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the departed officers, commending their selfless service and honour to the nation,” the statement said.
The Force also prayed for the peaceful repose of their souls and asked God to grant their families the strength to cope with the losses.
According to the statement, Olatunde began his policing career as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992, and served for more than 33 years before retiring as the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations on November 3, 2025.

During his career, he held several key operational and command positions across Abia, Lagos, Osun and Benue states, as well as at the Force Headquarters. His appointments included Divisional Police Officer in Ikire, Assistant Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations at the Western Port Authority in Lagos, Commander of the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit at the Force Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters, and later Assistant Inspector-General in charge of Operations.
The late retired AIG is survived by his wife and children.
The police further disclosed that CP Gwani, who hailed from Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, was born on November 11, 1970, and enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on November 10, 1997.
He served in several strategic capacities during his nearly 30-year career before his death in Egypt. The Force noted that his burial was conducted in Cairo in accordance with Islamic rites.
