Police Arrest Two Suspected Armed Robbers Over Oyo–Iwo Expressway Attack

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspected armed robbers in connection with a robbery attack along the Oyo–Iwo Expressway, recovering exhibits linked to the crime.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying the arrests followed a swift intelligence-led operation by police operatives.

According to the statement, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 5, 2026, after armed robbers reportedly barricaded the Oyo–Iwo Expressway around Akoda Village in Afijio Local Government Area and attacked unsuspecting motorists.

Ayanlade said the police received a distress call through the Command’s Control Room in Eleyele, Ibadan, prompting an immediate response and the deployment of operatives to the area.

He explained that sustained intelligence gathering and investigation by the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) led security operatives to the hideouts of the suspects, resulting in the arrest of Abubakar Jape and Sheu Dengi.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to participating in the robbery operation.

The police spokesman added that an identification parade was subsequently conducted, during which victims positively identified the two suspects as members of the gang that attacked and robbed them on the highway.

The command also recovered exhibits believed to be connected to the robbery, although details of the recovered items were not disclosed.

Ayanlade assured residents that efforts were ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal gang who remain at large.

He reiterated the commitment of the Oyo State Police Command to tackling violent crimes across the state and urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to assist security agencies in combating criminal activities.
