Police Nab Armed Robber Attacking Victims in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber, Nicholas Nweke, allegedly known for robbing unsuspecting victims at bus stops and other public places across the state.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who said the suspect was apprehended on December 25, 2025, while attempting to rob a victim in Awka.

Ikenga said operatives attached to the Central Police Station, Awka, responded promptly to the incident and met the victim struggling with the suspect over a firearm at the scene. The suspect was subsequently disarmed and arrested with the assistance of the police.

Items recovered from the suspect included a pump-action rifle, five expended cartridges, one Itel mobile phone, and a cash sum of N1,200.

According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly approached the victim and demanded his mobile phone and other valuables. Upon the victim’s refusal, the suspect reportedly fired shots, during which pellets struck two other unsuspecting individuals.

The injured persons were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are said to be stable and responding to treatment.

Ikenga added that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation, noting that further developments would be communicated.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command also announced the arrest of five suspected armed robbers who allegedly posed as vigilante operatives to rob passengers in a shuttle bus along Ring Road, Nibo, in Awka South Local Government Area.

The suspects were apprehended by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, following investigations into criminal conspiracy and armed robbery.

Police said two pump-action guns, five live cartridges, an ash-coloured shuttle bus, face masks, number plates, and other incriminating items were recovered from the suspects.
