Police kill two armed robbers in shootout in Bayelsa

Anti-Robbery Squad of the Bayelsa State Police Command has killed two suspected armed robbers in Yenagoa, the state capital, during a gun battle.

The incident occurred over the weekend on Aritallin road in Ovom, a suburb of Yenagoa Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses said the four-man robbery gang robbed one Mr Ebibo Ford of his phones and other valuables at gunpoint at Amarata.

They said Ford raised the alarm over the robbery while some sympathisers notified the police.

They said the police reportedly gave them a hot chase and the suspects were intercepted at Aritallin, about one kilometre from Amarata.

It was gathered that the robbers engaged the policemen in a gun duel, which resulted in the death of the two suspected robbers, while the remaining two escaped.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the killing of the two suspected armed robbers.

Butswat, a Superintendent of Police, said, “On July 10, 2020, about 2.30pm, a four-man robbery gang robbed one Ebibo Ford, male, of his phones and other valuables at gunpoint at Amarata area of Yenagoa.

“The victim raised the alarm, police intercepted them at Aritalin, Yenagoa, killed two in a shootout, while two escaped.”

He said four phones, two locally-made pistols with 4.9mm ammunition were recovered from the armed robbers.

He added that investigation was going on to ensure the arrest of the fleeing suspected armed robbers.
