Police Nab Two Suspects Over Attempted Theft Of Two-Week-Old Baby In Abia

The Abia State Police Command has arrested two suspects over conspiracy, attempted child theft and possession of drugs in Umuahia.

This was made known in a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on Saturday.

The police named the suspects as Nzubechi Chinagorom, male, 24, and Chinonso Chibundu, male, 25, all of Olokoro, Umuahia South LGA.

The police explained, “On 25/05/2026, the suspects went to the residence of Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo, female, 32, of the same address.

“Nzubechi Chinagorom attempted to forcefully take away her two-week-old baby girl, which resulted in a struggle with the mother. In the process, he assaulted her and stabbed her with a kitchen knife, causing the child to fall and hit her head on the ground.”

Meanwhile, the police said Chinonso Chibundu remained outside the house, acting as a lookout.

Following the victim’s distress call, both suspects fled the scene but were later apprehended at a nearby bus stop, where they were reportedly found taking substances suspected to be hard drugs.

The mother and child, the statement said, were immediately rushed to the hospital, where they received treatment and have since recovered.

The statement further disclosed that the suspects were apprehended, exhibits were recovered, and the investigation has been concluded at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

The suspects, police said, will be charged to court on June 2.

The Abia State Police Command reiterated its commitment to its constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property and advised residents to partner with the police in crime prevention by reporting any security concerns to the nearest police station.
