President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their stunning triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
D’Tigress clinched their seventh African title — and an unprecedented fifth consecutive win — on Sunday night after defeating Mali 78–64 in a gripping final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
In a statement released via his official X handle by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the team’s exceptional performance, resilience, and unity. He noted that despite losing the first quarter, the team displayed unyielding determination to rally back and emerge victorious.
“Your superb performance throughout the competition has made Nigeria proud. Like the Super Falcons, you have inspired our young ladies. You embodied the indomitable Nigerian spirit, the power of unity, and the rewards of hard work,” President Tinubu stated.
He praised Head Coach Rena Wakama and her technical crew for their leadership and strategic brilliance, and also lauded the Nigeria Basketball Federation for its unwavering support of the team.
President Tinubu emphasized that the D’Tigress’ achievement goes beyond sport, calling it a historic moment that has elevated the nation’s profile and energized a new generation of Nigerian girls.
“By winning the AfroBasket trophy for a record fifth consecutive time, you have written your names in history and shown the world what to expect out of Africa,” the President added.

He assured the team of the Federal Government’s continued support as they begin preparations for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament in March 2026.
President Tinubu also expressed eagerness to personally receive the victorious team and the AfroBasket trophy in Abuja.
“The government and the people of Nigeria celebrate you and remain grateful for the highly elevating performances. I wish you all a safe trip back home,” the statement concluded.
D’Tigress now hold the record for the most consecutive AfroBasket titles in the history of African women’s basketball, reinforcing Nigeria’s dominance on the continental stage.
