Reconstruction Kicks Off at Lagos Airport, FAAN Issues Travel Advisory

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the commencement of reconstruction works at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, urging passengers to adjust their travel plans to avoid disruptions.

In a travel advisory released on Friday, FAAN cautioned travelers to leave early for the airport, obey traffic instructions, and make use of designated car parks to ensure smoother operations.

“With the ongoing reconstruction, only passengers should come to the airport during this period due to limited space. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding,” the authority said.

The development follows the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) August 1 approval of contracts worth over N900 billion to overhaul critical aviation infrastructure nationwide.

The highlight of the approval is the full-scale rehabilitation and modernisation of MMIA’s terminal one.

According to Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation, the project will involve stripping the terminal down to its bare structure and rebuilding all major systems, including electrical, mechanical, and plumbing installations.

The reconstruction, which comes at a cost of N712.25 billion, is expected to take 22 months to complete.

With Lagos airport being the country’s busiest gateway, FAAN’s advisory is seen as a move to mitigate possible chaos during the reconstruction period.
