Reno Omokri Recants Past Claims, Details Apology To President Tinubu

Former presidential aide and social commentator Reno Omokri has publicly clarified and reaffirmed his retraction of past allegations made against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following statements attributed to activist Omoyele Sowore and his lawyer during court proceedings on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

In a detailed statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, Omokri admitted that he had previously made uncomplimentary remarks about Tinubu while he was the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), believing the claims to be true at the time. He, however, said subsequent findings revealed the allegations were false.

Omokri stated that upon discovering the inaccuracies, he publicly withdrew the remarks across multiple platforms, both in writing and on video. He noted that on May 29, 2023, the day Tinubu was sworn in as President, he issued a statement recognising him as Nigeria’s leader and urged Nigerians to move forward in unity.

He said he reiterated this position on October 26, 2023, following the Supreme Court’s dismissal of all petitions challenging Tinubu’s election. According to Omokri, the apex court’s ruling clearly established that there were no criminal charges or convictions against the President, contrary to earlier media narratives.

Omokri further disclosed that he publicly endorsed the judgment on the same day it was delivered and later described it as “righteous” during a television interview with TVC on October 28, 2023. He added that in subsequent media appearances, including on News Central Television and Channels TV’s Politics Today, he openly admitted he was wrong, apologised, and explained that he had relied on misleading reports, particularly from platforms associated with Sowore.

The former aide also revealed that he travelled from the United States to Nigeria on October 1, 2024, where he sought a private audience with President Tinubu and apologised in person, stating that his actions were based on mistaken beliefs rather than malice.

Omokri said his latest statement was necessary to set the record straight and reaffirm his consistent public withdrawal of the allegations, amid renewed references to the issue in court.
