Rivers Impeachment: Governance Reduced to Childish Politics — Aisha Yesufu

Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has raised alarms over the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, warning that the impeachment drive against Governor Siminalayi Fubara threatens the welfare of ordinary citizens and the state’s democratic stability.

Yesufu shared her views on her verified X handle on Friday, January 15, condemning what she described as “childish politics” by the State House of Assembly.

“Today’s announcement that the Rivers State House of Assembly is moving again to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara is deeply concerning,” she said, stressing that the political battle has shifted attention away from pressing public needs.

The co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls Movement highlighted that Rivers residents are grappling with rising costs, poor healthcare, failing infrastructure, insecurity, and high unemployment, yet lawmakers appear focused on personal power and political manoeuvres.

“In Rivers State, governance has been reduced to childish politics. Lawmakers have become playthings for political operators,” Yesufu stated.

She warned that prolonged political infighting risks further eroding public trust in elected officials, while ordinary citizens bear the brunt of neglect.

“While millions of Nigerians suffer under economic hardship and daily hardship, it is worrying that those entrusted with public office in Rivers are more focused on internal political battles than on delivering real governance for the people,” she added.

Yesufu’s intervention underscores broader concerns among civil society groups that the impeachment saga could deepen social and economic hardship in the state if left unresolved.

By framing the Rivers crisis as a direct threat to citizens’ lives and democracy, Yesufu urged lawmakers to reconsider their priorities and place public welfare above political rivalry.

Her comments come as the Rivers Assembly formally seeks a panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against Fubara and his deputy, further intensifying tensions in the oil-rich state.
