Rivers PDP Declares Ibadan Convention Illegal, Says Outcome Won’t Stand

The Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State has dismissed Saturday’s national convention held in Ibadan as illegal, insisting that none of its outcomes will survive judicial review.

In a statement, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Kenneth Yowika, commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for staying away from the convention.

He said INEC’s absence showed respect for the rule of law and a commitment to democratic standards.

Yowika explained that two Federal High Court orders had stopped the party from holding the convention, even though another court in Ibadan permitted it to go ahead.

He noted that despite the conflicting judgments, the organisers pushed forward, elected new national officers, and dissolved some state-level executives.

He described the entire process as a “sham” and criticised what he called a blatant disregard for valid court orders.

According to him, INEC’s decision to abide by the Federal High Court rulings reflects the conduct expected in a democracy.

The Rivers PDP expressed confidence that a competent court would ultimately nullify the convention. The statement urged members to stay calm and trust the judicial process.

“The ill-advised convention cannot withstand legal scrutiny as it is already sub judice at the Court of Appeal.

“We rest our faith solely on the judiciary and urge all members to do the same,” the statement read.
