The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has fixed Saturday, August 9, 2025, for fresh local government elections across the 23 local government areas of the state.
The announcement was made by the RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.), during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
The decision follows last Friday’s Supreme Court ruling, which nullified the local government elections conducted on October 5, 2024, rendering the tenure of previously elected officials invalid.
Justice Enebeli stated that the commission’s decision aligns with Section 5 of the RSIEC Law No. 2 of 2018, empowering the body to organize and regulate local government elections in the state.
“In compliance with the Supreme Court judgment and in exercise of our statutory powers, the commission hereby announces that local government council elections will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, across all 23 local government areas of Rivers State,” Enebeli said.

He further outlined that the commission would provide guidelines for political parties, stipulating rules and procedures for electioneering campaigns.
The fresh elections come amid heightened political tension in Rivers State, following the legal battle that led to the nullification of the previous polls.
