A 100-level student of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, was reportedly shot on the university campus on Wednesday, two days after suspected rival cult groups engaged in a shooting incident at the institution.
The latest victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was said to have been attacked by suspected cultists. Details surrounding the shooting remained unclear as of Wednesday evening.
A source familiar with the incident said the student was taken to a hospital after sustaining gunshot injuries, with efforts reportedly underway to raise funds for surgery to remove bullet pellets lodged in his body.
The source, who neither disclosed his name nor the identity of the victim due to the sensitive nature of the issue, added, “His close friends were contributing money to raise funds for the surgery to happen.”
It remained unclear whether the student was affiliated with any cult group.
A video circulating on social media showed the injured student lying on a hospital bed before being carried into the university premises by some of his coursemates.

The incident occurred two days after suspected members of the Vikings and Ku Klux Klan cult groups were reportedly involved in a supremacy clash on the campus on Monday, resulting in sporadic shooting and heightened tension among students.
The Rivers State Police Command had confirmed the Monday incident, with its spokesperson, Blessing Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, saying the command was investigating the clash between the suspected cult groups.
When contacted on Wednesday over the latest shooting, Agabe said she had seen the viral video but would obtain further details from the Divisional Police Officer in the area and respond to enquiries. She had yet to provide further information as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the university management has suspended all outstanding activities scheduled for the Students’ Union Government Week following the recent security concerns on campus.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday by the institution’s Registrar, Dr Chinonye Ajie, management directed students to resume normal academic activities on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The university warned that students who failed to attend lectures would be held accountable, while urging them to avoid conduct capable of disrupting their studies or threatening peace and security on campus.
The statement reads, “This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect.
Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday, August 13th, 2026, for normal academic activities.
“Any student who fails to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions.
“Students are also strongly warned to desist from any action that is inimical to their academic pursuit and the peace of the University.”
