In a decisive move to enhance road safety, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has banned 60,000-litre fuel tankers from operating on Nigerian roads.
The ban, set to take effect from March 1, 2025, was announced by Ogbugo Ukoha, NMDPRA’s Executive Director of Distribution Systems, Storage, and Retailing Infrastructure, during a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to Ukoha, the decision follows an alarming increase in road accidents involving heavy-duty petroleum tankers, posing significant risks to lives, property, and road infrastructure.
“This measure is aimed at mitigating truck-in-transit incidents and ensuring safer transportation of petroleum products across the country,” he stated.

The move aligns with the government’s broader efforts to improve road safety regulations and enhance compliance within the petroleum distribution sector.
Stakeholders in the downstream sector are expected to adjust to the new directive before enforcement begins in March.
