Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially unveiled a towering Eyo Monument at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History in Onikan, Lagos Island, in a bid to deepen cultural tourism and preserve the state’s rich heritage.
The unveiling on Friday, December 26, 2025, drew senior government officials, traditional rulers, artists, and cultural stakeholders, all celebrating the Eyo masquerade as a defining symbol of Lagos identity.
Sanwo-Olu described the monument as a reflection of the city’s history, spirit, and continuity, noting that the Eyo tradition remains central to Lagos’ cultural narrative.
He added that projects like the monument help tell the city’s story to both residents and international visitors.
Standing nearly 40 feet tall, the sculpture was created by acclaimed Nigerian artist Dotun Popoola.
It is intended as a permanent cultural landmark within the centre, designed to educate, inspire, and attract tourists with an interest in Yoruba history and artistic expression.
The governor said the initiative aligns with the state government’s broader strategy of leveraging culture, arts, and heritage infrastructure to expand tourism, stimulate economic activity, and create opportunities within the creative sector.

He also lauded the collaboration between government agencies, cultural institutions, and creative professionals, emphasising that sustained partnerships are key to safeguarding and promoting Lagos’ cultural legacy.
The John Randle Centre features exhibition galleries, an amphitheatre, and communal spaces dedicated to Yoruba culture and history.
Officials noted that the unveiling was strategically timed ahead of the annual Eyo Festival on December 27, 2025, to further boost visitor interest in the area.
