Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Enugu State, working alongside the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, have successfully rescued a kidnapped woman following a gun battle with suspected kidnappers in Udenu Local Government Area.
The rescue operation, which took place in a forest along the Ohebe-Orba axis, led to the neutralisation of one suspect, while others reportedly fled with gunshot injuries.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the operation was launched after credible intelligence was received on Friday regarding the abduction of the victim in the Ezimo community.
Following the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, ordered an immediate response, directing the Divisional Police Officer in Udenu to mobilise a joint security team comprising police operatives, soldiers, Neighbourhood Watch members, and Forest Guards.
The team tracked the suspects to the Agu Orba Forest, where they encountered resistance.
“Upon sighting the operatives, the hoodlums opened fire, but the operatives responded with superior firepower,” Ndukwe said, confirming that one suspect was neutralised while others escaped.

The abducted woman was rescued unharmed, debriefed, and reunited with her family, bringing relief to the community and her loved ones.
Security operatives also recovered several items from the scene, including live ammunition, mobile phones, weapons such as a machete and dagger, as well as cash and personal belongings believed to belong to the suspects.
The Commissioner of Police commended the coordinated efforts of the security agencies, describing the operation as a testament to effective collaboration in tackling criminal activities.
He also reassured residents of the command’s continued commitment to ensuring safety and urged members of the public to provide timely and credible information that could assist in apprehending the fleeing suspects.
The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of the country, while also underscoring the importance of intelligence-driven operations and community cooperation in combating kidnapping and other violent crimes.
