The Senate has confirmed Sylvester Nwakuche as the new Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), following his appointment by President Bola Tinubu on December 13, 2024. Nwakuche replaces Haliru Nababa, who recently retired from service.
His confirmation was finalized during plenary on Tuesday after the Senate Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, presented its report recommending his approval. Lawmakers unanimously endorsed the committee’s findings, paving the way for Nwakuche’s official appointment.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while announcing the confirmation, urged Nwakuche to prioritize the security of correctional facilities across the country. He stressed that expectations are high, particularly in curbing the rising cases of jailbreaks.

The Senate’s call for urgent reforms comes amid a recent jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, where 12 inmates escaped, and a correctional officer lost his life.
Lawmakers expressed hope that with Nwakuche at the helm, such security breaches would be effectively addressed, ensuring a more secure correctional system in Nigeria.
