The Senate has approved a fresh extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act.
The extension, approved on Tuesday, moves the deadline from September 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
The decision followed the consideration and passage of an amendment bill by the lawmakers, clause by clause, allowing ministries, departments and agencies to continue implementing capital projects under the 2025 budget until the end of the year.
The bill was sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District.
Leading debate on the general principles of the bill, Bamidele said the extension was necessary to ensure that capital projects captured in the 2025 budget were adequately implemented.
He noted that the execution of the projects had not reached the desired level despite the release of approximately the funds allocated to ministries, departments and agencies.

According to him, extending the implementation period would provide the relevant government agencies with additional time to complete ongoing projects and utilise the appropriated funds.
The Senate Leader presented the legislation as a bill seeking to amend the Appropriations (Repeal & Enactment) Act 2025 by extending the implementation period of its capital component from September 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026.
The measure, identified as SB. 1067, also covers other matters related to the extension of the capital budget implementation period.
The Senate subsequently considered the bill clause by clause and approved the extension.
