The Senate will on Wednesday, October 29, begin the screening and confirmation of the newly appointed service chiefs nominated by President Bola Tinubu as part of his administration’s plan to revitalise Nigeria’s security system.
During Tuesday’s plenary, October 28, Senate President Godswill Akpabio read a letter from the President urging lawmakers to give “expeditious consideration” to the appointments.
The nominees are General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Waheedi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Major General Emmanuel Undiendeye as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
Akpabio referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for immediate screening and confirmation.
The announcement follows a closed-door meeting held on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, between Tinubu and the new service chiefs.

It was his first formal engagement with the military leadership since last week’s wide-ranging reshuffle of the nation’s security heads.
According to a statement from the Presidency, the appointments form part of the government’s broader “efforts to strengthen the national security architecture” and reposition the Armed Forces for better efficiency.
Tinubu also commended the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, along with other retired officers, for what he described as their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership.”
He charged the new service chiefs to prove their competence through professionalism, vigilance, and unity in protecting the country and restoring public trust in the Armed Forces.
The Presidency added that the fresh appointments, once confirmed, are expected to enhance coordination among security agencies and intensify the fight against insurgency, banditry, and organised crime across Nigeria.
