Shehu Hails Mahama’s Stand On Slavery, Says Africa Reclaims Historical Narrative

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has commended Ghanaian President, John Mahama, for what he described as a bold and historic step in confronting the legacy of slavery on the global stage.

In a statement shared via his verified X handle on Friday, Sani asserted that Mahama’s action represents a breakthrough many African leaders have failed to achieve since the establishment of the United Nations.

He noted that the development signals a revival of the ideals championed by Pan-African icons such as Kwame Nkrumah, emphasizing that their long-standing call for Africa to properly contextualize  its history is gaining renewed traction.

According to Sani, Pan-African leaders have consistently pushed for global recognition of the atrocities of slavery, rather than a disproportionate focus on events like the Second World War.

He argued that recent developments at the UN, particularly the categorisation of slavery as one of the gravest crimes against humanity, mark a significant correction of what he termed a “distortion of history.”

“Ghana’s president has done what many African leaders could not achieve. Those who opposed the resolution have unresolved historical ties to slavery,” Sani stated.

He further maintained that the legacy of slavery has played a central role in the systemic racial discrimination faced by Black people globally, describing it as a root cause of long-standing prejudices.

The former lawmaker’s remarks come on the heels of Mahama’s address in New York earlier in the week, where the Ghanaian leader criticised the United States government over policies he said risk erasing key aspects of Black history.

Mahama warned that such actions could have far-reaching global consequences, urging sustained efforts to preserve historical truth and promote racial justice.
