Former lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has argued that international law is selectively applied, insisting that it mainly affects weak and economically disadvantaged nations.
In a post shared on his verified X account on Sunday,the 4th of January, 2026, Sani stated that global laws tend to apply to countries without nuclear capabilities, while powerful nations and their allies often operate beyond such legal constraints.
He lamented that dominant powers can invade, occupy, and dispossess other nations, openly threaten judges of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and undermine the sovereignty of states without facing consequences.

Sani’s remarks followed the reported invasion of Venezuela by United States forces, which allegedly led to the arrest and removal of the country’s President, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife on Saturday, the 3rd of January, 2026.
He wrote, “International law is made for poor or weak countries; it’s law for those countries without nuclear weapons. Superpowers and their cronies are insulated from that International law.”
