Former senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has expressed optimism that international perceptions of Nigeria are beginning to improve.
Sani shared this view via a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, on Thursday, 5th of February, 2026, linking the shift to recent diplomatic developments involving Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
His comments followed her invitation by the United States President Donald Trump to attend the 74th Annual National Prayer Breakfast held at Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
While addressing participants at the event, Trump publicly acknowledged the Nigerian First Lady, describing her as “a very respected woman.” He further stated: “We are honoured to be joined today by the First Lady of Nigeria, who also happens to serve as a Christian pastor at one of the largest churches. A very respected woman,” Trump had said.

Reacting to the recognition, Sani noted that the gesture signaled a positive turn in Nigeria’s global standing. He wrote: “The First Lady has gotten public recognition and respect from President Trump.
“A hardened stance on the country is now softening, courtesy of adept diplomatic engagement. We hope for the best.”
According to the former lawmaker, such high-level acknowledgment reflects the impact of strategic diplomacy and could mark the beginning of warmer international relations for Nigeria.
