Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has called on Nigerians to directly engage their elected lawmakers following the National Assembly’s rejection of the real-time electronic transmission of election results.
In a post shared via his X account on Thursday, Sani urged citizens to channel their reactions—whether approval or dissatisfaction—towards the lawmakers representing their constituencies, rather than focusing criticism on President Bola Tinubu or Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
“The lawmakers have rejected the real-time electronic transmission of results,” Sani wrote. “If you like what they did or you don’t like what they did, you should be courageous enough to go to the social media handle of the lawmaker representing your constituency and express your happiness or bitterness.”
He stressed that legislative decisions are collective responsibilities, noting that Senate President Akpabio represents only a senatorial district in Akwa Ibom State, just like every other senator. According to him, accountability should begin at the constituency level.

“Be brave enough to mention your senator by name on your handle. Everyone is an adult there,” Sani added.
His remarks have sparked renewed debate online about legislative accountability, civic engagement, and the role of citizens in influencing democratic processes beyond election periods.
The rejection of real-time electronic transmission of results has remained a contentious issue, with critics arguing it undermines transparency, while supporters insist it preserves legislative discretion.
