Ex-AAU Student Leaders Drag University, Police To Court, Demand ₦20m

Two former Student Union Government leaders of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, have filed a lawsuit against the university management and the Nigeria Police Force, alleging unlawful arrest and detention, and demanding ₦20 million in damages.

The suit was filed on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at the Edo State High Court, Ekpoma Judicial Division.

The plaintiffs, Lifted Oyinbo Edubamoh and Igoh Ayano Christopher, claim they were arrested in January 2026 following protests over rising insecurity and reports of kidnappings around the university community.

They allege that they were detained for several days without formal charges, access to legal counsel, or notification to their families.

In the filing, the former student leaders are asking the court to declare their detention unlawful and unconstitutional.

They are also seeking monetary compensation and other reliefs the court may deem appropriate, citing violations of their rights to personal liberty, dignity, and fair hearing.

The arrests followed the submission of a letter to university authorities addressing concerns over safety on campus.

The plaintiffs argue that the actions of both the university management and the police amounted to harassment and intimidation.

Legal observers say the case could set an important precedent regarding the limits of institutional authority and the role of law enforcement in handling student protests, with implications for civil liberties and accountability within tertiary institutions.
