Shehu Sani Warns Against Attacks On INEC Chairman, Urges Support

Former senator Shehu Sani has cautioned political actors and members of the public against making threats or casting aspersions on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing such actions as harmful to Nigeria’s democratic process.

Sani made the remarks in a post shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, amid growing political tensions and public scrutiny surrounding electoral leadership and reforms ahead of future elections.

According to the former lawmaker, undermining the credibility of the electoral umpire through mistrust and public attacks is “unconscionable” and counterproductive. He stressed that safeguarding democracy requires a more constructive approach that prioritizes accountability and institutional strengthening.

“What is most important,” Sani wrote, “is that the head of the electoral body should be tasked, monitored and supported to conduct credible and transparent elections for the sustenance of our democracy.”

He argued that rather than weakening public confidence in the electoral system, stakeholders should focus on oversight, engagement, and support that enable INEC to deliver elections that reflect the will of the people.

Sani’s comments come as debates continue over electoral integrity, reforms, and the role of institutions in ensuring free, fair, and credible polls in Nigeria.
