A prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Sulaiman Onikijipa, has called on political leaders in Nigeria to embrace transparency, accountability, and prudent management of the nation’s resources to drive sustainable development.
Delivering his Eid sermon at the Eid praying ground in Grammar School, Ojodu Berger, Lagos, on Friday, the respected scholar emphasised that responsible governance and equitable distribution of resources are essential to national progress.
Onikijipa, who serves as the fourth Grand Mufti of Ilorin, urged leaders to adopt people-centred policies that directly impact citizens’ welfare.
“Use Nigeria’s resources judiciously. Spend wisely and ensure benefits reach all sectors and the people,” he said, noting that such principles are not only civic responsibilities but also rooted in Islamic teachings as prescribed in the Quran.
The cleric also reflected on the spiritual significance of Ramadan, describing it as a period of moral discipline, compassion, and renewed consciousness of God. According to him, the fasting period instils values of humility, generosity, and empathy towards the less privileged.

“Ramadan is not merely abstaining from food and drink; it is a time for spiritual cleansing, promoting love within the Muslim ummah, and reinforcing obedience to Allah both publicly and privately,” he added.
Speaking after the sermon, Imam Sahdalah Onikijipa congratulated Muslims on completing the fast and urged them to sustain the virtues of patience, kindness, and self-restraint cultivated during the holy month.
The clerics further encouraged Nigerians to support government efforts through prayers while maintaining faith in the country’s potential for growth and stability.
The message comes at a time when calls for improved governance, fiscal responsibility, and inclusive development continue to dominate national discourse, particularly as citizens seek tangible outcomes from public leadership.
