Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Freetown, Sierra Leone, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The regional summit, taking place on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre, will convene presidents and other senior officials from across the West African bloc to deliberate on issues shaping the region’s future.

Discussions are expected to centre on regional peace and security, democratic governance, economic cooperation, trade, and sustainable development, as member states seek to deepen integration and strengthen collective responses to emerging challenges.
The leaders are also expected to consider reports and policy recommendations from previous ministerial meetings before taking decisions on initiatives aimed at advancing ECOWAS’ strategic objectives and enhancing cooperation among member countries.
Shettima is scheduled to return to Nigeria after concluding his official engagements at the summit.
