Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, called on Nigerians to strengthen unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence as Muslims across the country observed Eid-el-Kabir.
He made the appeal after observing Eid prayers in Maiduguri, Borno State, urging citizens to remain committed to national cohesion despite economic pressures and global uncertainties.
Shettima said Nigerians must continue to pray for peace and avoid actions capable of deepening divisions.
“Our message to Nigerians is to continue praying for peace and for mutual coexistence amongst all Nigerians,” he said.
He also called for restraint in political and public engagement, stressing the need for maturity and generosity of spirit.
“There is need for maturity, for forbearance, and for generosity of spirit… what binds us together surpasses whatever divides us,” he said.

On the economy, the Vice President noted that rising cost-of-living pressures were a global challenge, not unique to Nigeria.
“The world is still in turmoil. The cost of living indices globally has risen,” he said.
He assured that governments at all levels were working to ease hardship and improve citizens’ welfare.
“Governments at all levels are poised to ameliorate the sufferings of the Nigerian people,” he added.
Shettima concluded with a prayer for peace: “Let there be peace in the land.”
The message came as Muslims across Nigeria joined the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, a festival marked by sacrifice, reflection and devotion.
