Sickle Cell Advocate Brutalized in Abuja Home Invasion, Seeks Justice

Disturbing case of sexual assault and armed robbery has emerged from Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, involving a well-known sickle cell awareness advocate who was attacked in her private residence.

The survivor, Judith, popularly known on social media as @sicklemotivator, shared the harrowing details of her ordeal via Instagram on Wednesday, prompting a wave of public outrage and renewed scrutiny of the Nigerian police’s response to gender-based violence.

According to her statement, the assailant, whom she claims to have recognized, broke into her home, subjected her to physical and sexual violence, and stole valuables.

She is currently hospitalized and undergoing treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

“I’m broken and traumatized,” she wrote. “This August is black.”

Judith also revealed that despite filing a report, there has been little action from the authorities.

“It’s been over 24 hours and all the police have done is take my statement,” she said. “How do I begin to rebuild my life?”

The emotional toll is compounded by her ongoing health challenges. Judith, who has sickle cell anemia, recently underwent surgery in June and is preparing for another medical procedure.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from advocacy groups and concerned citizens, who are demanding swift justice and greater protection for women, particularly those living with chronic illnesses or disabilities.

As of the time of this report, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has not issued an official statement on the case.

Human rights organizations have reiterated calls for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s policing system, especially in the handling of sexual violence cases.

“It is unacceptable that a woman who knows her attacker, has reported the crime, and is clearly vulnerable is still waiting for meaningful action,” said one activist, calling the situation a “failure of both justice and empathy.”
