“South Africa Must Go” Protest Hits MTN Ghana Headquarters

Tensions rose in Accra on Thursday, June 11, 2026, as protesters under the “South Africa Must Go” campaign marched to the headquarters of MTN Ghana, demanding action over renewed xenophobic attacks on African migrants in South Africa.

The demonstrators gathered in large numbers, chanting slogans and carrying placards as they accused South African authorities of failing to protect foreign nationals facing violence and intimidation.

Videos circulating on social media showed crowds converging on the telecommunications company’s head office as security personnel monitored the situation.

The protest reflects growing public anger in Ghana over repeated attacks on African migrants in South Africa and calls for stronger action against those responsible.

It comes weeks after Ghana evacuated its citizens from South Africa amid rising insecurity.

On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, about 300 Ghanaian nationals arrived in Accra under a government-facilitated evacuation programme.

Receiving the returnees, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the government had put in place support measures for their reintegration and welfare.

He stressed that the evacuees would not be treated as refugees, adding that a structured assistance package had been approved, though details were not immediately disclosed.

The evacuation followed escalating xenophobic incidents in South Africa that have strained diplomatic relations and triggered repatriation efforts across several African countries.

Thursday’s protest targeted MTN Ghana, one of the most visible South African-linked businesses in the country, underscoring rising public pressure over the crisis.
