Senate Warns States: Stop Making Peace Deals With Terrorists, Bandits

The Senate has called on state governments across Nigeria to halt all forms of negotiation and peace agreements with terrorists and armed bandits, warning that such arrangements rarely produce lasting peace and may end up strengthening criminal networks.

Lawmakers also directed the Nigeria Police Force and the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre to identify and arrest armed bandits who allegedly use social media platforms, particularly TikTok, to interact with the public while flaunting large sums of money suspected to be proceeds of crime.

The resolutions followed a motion moved by Senator Sunday Karimi, who raised alarm over a fresh wave of terrorist attacks in parts of Kogi West Senatorial District.

Presenting the motion, Senator Karimi cited a recent assault on Iluke-Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, where armed men reportedly stormed a secondary school and attempted to abduct students writing the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

He said the attack led to the killing of the school’s vice principal, a teacher, and another resident of the community.

The lawmaker also recalled that the incident came less than 24 hours after another attack on a private residence in Odo-Ere, Yagba West Local Government Area of the state on June 8, 2026.

Following deliberations, the senate invited the Commander of the National Centre for Control of Arms and Small Weapons (NCSALW) to provide explanations on the recent incidents and address growing concerns over arms proliferation across the country.
