South-East Consumers Hail Gov Over Disco License, Predict Investor Inflow

The South East Electricity Consumers Association (SEECA) has publicly commended the administration of Anambra State Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, for its demonstrated “commitment to protecting the rights of electricity consumers in the state.”

This praise follows a major regulatory shift: the formal transfer of regulatory oversight of Anambra’s electricity market from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the state government.

This transition was finalized after the inauguration of five commissioners on the 9th of October, 2025, who will lead the newly established Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Speaking to reporters in Anambra on Monday, the 1st of December, 2025, Sebastine Okafor, the Coordinator of SEECA, described the recent licensing of the state’s new electricity distribution company, First Power Electricity Distribution Company Limited (FPEDC), as “a welcome development.” Okafor expressed optimism that the regulatory changes have the potential to significantly reinforce electricity infrastructure and stimulate industrial expansion, provided the implementation is effective.

Okafor stressed the high expectations for the new market structure, declaring: “Anambra State deserves a more efficient, responsive, and consumer-focused electricity market that will attract investment, expand local industries, and improve service delivery across all communities.”

He also stated that the arrival of FPEDC in the power sector should mark the beginning of enhanced accountability, superior customer service, and the introduction of contemporary energy solutions.

Looking ahead, the SEECA Coordinator called upon the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission to place a high priority on resolving critical consumer issues. These priorities include “metering, tariff transparency, transformer rehabilitation, feeder expansion, and prompt resolution of complaints.” Okafor concluded by emphasizing that the ultimate benchmark for the new regulatory regime’s success “will ultimately be measured by the level of relief and improvement consumers experience in their daily lives.”
